Tellin' Stories
Tellin’ Stories grew from the letters my brother, Spencer, sent me over several years. He died in 1998, when he was 27.
The project draws on the visual and material language of the 1990s, when our relationship was recorded through handwritten letters, cassette tapes, photo-booth strips and printed photographs. These objects carry the colour, texture and intimacy of the decade, holding marks of the person he was and the people we were then.
Bringing them together with contemporary photographs became a way of revisiting and celebrating Spencer’s life while confronting the gaps created by grief and time. Tellin’ Stories is about how we remember someone we loved when so much of their story survives only in fragments.
